Type ready in the console to start the game
Type "ready" in the console when you are ready to play. It's basic in every tdm-mod and that's the only command you really need to learn. I'll repeat: type ready in console (the key right under the esc-key, to the left of the "1" key) to start the game.
Be sure you know what your teamskin is
Ok, this might sound obvious, but even today (4 years after I started playing) I find myself jumping up and down inside the railcave just to be sure if my teamskin is male or female. Especially after a few games it's easy to mess up. Just don't mess up, and you're practically a teamplayer already.
Do not touch the ammopack unless you got the CHAINGUN
If you grab the ammopack infront of someone with chaingun when you have no chaingun yourself, it will piss off so many players off it's not even funny. And even if you have the chaingun, be sure to have it out so the other guy actually see you have it. Then he will only be slightly pissed off, but that's not your fault really. Actually I would advice you to not try to doublejump to mega before he gets it, because you'll miss the jump. Yes you will, see for yourself.
Get and USE weapon-drop binds
Yes, anyone dropping a gun is a friend of mine. You really need binds to drop every gun, and also be able to use them in a game. It will make your whole teamplay experience a lot more pleasant, as your teammates will not go all mad at you, and even with a poor score a teammate dropping weapons is a good teammate.
/bind key "drop <name of the gun>;say_team <weaponname> dropped!"
Don't go stealing weapons
If you don't have/use dropbinds don't go around picking up weapons infront of teammates who have none. In TDM weapons are scarce, so for instance the machinegun and even nades have a higher value than in let's say a duel or FFA with weaponstay enabled. Pick up your gun, and if you see a teammate nearby leave the other for him to pick up. Having weapondrop binds helps a lot, and if you manage to drop him a weapon before he types "omg newb stop hogging the weapon you newb" your teammate's annoyance-level will drop fast.
Don't take the yellow armor and the mega
This isn't a rule, but if you're new to tdm and quake2 in general don't go doublestacking on armors and health. Pick up the armor and leave the mega, or the other way around. This is of course if a teammate is nearby. If not, the items are up for grabs. There are some exceptions to the rule, but I wont go into details. Just don't do it, it annoys a lot of people. In tdm having 100 health and 50 armor is as much as you need.
Be carefull when picking up ammo
If you don't have the weapon, just don't pick up the ammo. The classic example is the slugs above the lower rocketlauncher as well, do NOT pick them up if a teammate is nearby. Chances are he has been waiting there for 25 seconds. Even if he has only blaster it could be because he has used his last slug. The same goes for the 3 bulletpacks near water/upper rocketlauncher as well. When someone is trying to hold the megaroom clear from enemies with chaingun, bullets are of prime importance. So if you can, avoid picking them up, and if you do be sure to drop them to your teammate with chain.
Don't blaster a teammate near water
I know some use the blaster to show that they are in desperate need of a gun. But don't fire at your teammate, especially near the water. Because near the railpool even an armoshard or a stimpack can save your life, as you can survive a rail with 100 heatlh and 2 armor, or 102 health. A blaster will knock off the extra armor/health and make your teammate a fragbait for rail.
If someone is waiting for rail, don't go into water
The railgun spawns every 30 seconds, and the water is slooow. So if you see a teammate saying "I'm at Railgun" as you spawn, don't go running into the water to get the rail. When you get there you can't claim the gun as your teammate was there first. First come first serve. So then you have to take the long way back, and the closest gun is the machinegun in the sewers. It takes a while to get there, and you're not doing anything productive. So instead, head for the machinegun or up the stairs immediatly from spawn if you know someone on your team is waiting by rail.
Do not walk in the way
It's better to stand back and await your move than recklessly running into every situation trying to get a frag. Avoid running between enemies and your teammates, avoid blocking the path for a teammates who are speeding around the map. You just focus on your game, and pick your fights. If your team rely on you being the best scoring player then you don't need to read this guide!
Don't hide, but don't rush either
This is what makes my head hurt: noone likes a teammate who hides the whole game, but noone likes a teammates who rush all the time without a gun giving away easy frags. So the lesson is that you don't hide, but you don't rush unless you a got a gun to rush with and you actually hit your targets!
Don't listen to the ones saying "You camp lift"
Just don't, these are pickup games meant to be fun. Camping that lift isn't gonna make you any better at tdm, you're better off roaming around the map having a ball instead of pleasing a couple seasoned veterans who play this game as if their life depended on it!
It's a game, have as much fun as you can, but try to make it a good game for the others as well
PS: just a reminder
