The centre had earlier issued a tsunami warning after the quake struck off the western coast of New Zealand at a depth of 33 kilometres under water.
The epicentre of the quake was 161 kilometres west of Invercargill, off of New Zealand's South Island.
The PTWC first issued a tsunami watch, then upgraded to warning status, then said that a potentially destructive tsunami had been generated by the quake.
Sea reading levels confirmed a tsunami had been generated, but there was no word on how large the waves were expected to be or if they would reach a populated coast.
"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region near the epicenter within minutes to hours," the warning centre said.
However, by 7:30 a.m. ET, the centre announced that the tsunami was small and posed no threat to residents in the area.
The waves were less than 20 centimetres high.
"Danger to boats and coastal structures can continue for several hours due to rapid currents as local conditions can cause a wide variation in tsunami wave action. The all clear determination must be made by local authorities," said a statement on the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center's website.
"No tsunami threat exists for other coastal areas in the Pacific although some other areas may experience small sea level changes. The tsunami warning is now cancelled for all areas covered by this center."
