ran across this the other day;
Having run an IRC room for a few years and finding out what works and what doesn't, I've realised there has to be some kind of founded ground rules. Implicit ones are constantly broken by people that think they're being "original" or "creative" instead of belligerent so it has to be stated somewhere. These are the
non-negotiable rules of the board codified in this post which are based off the IRC channel.
#1. No topic vipers. If you want a topic, bring one up, but don't try to leech one out of the crowd. If you want to discuss something, go ahead and be the first to post about it. Also concerning the nature of topics is the purpose of the board. We are here to discuss occultism. Do not make posts about your personal life or to keep people informed about your general state of well-being. Posts about "Hey, I'm new here..." are fine
if they are coupled with something more substantial because, blatantly, we don't care about the trivialities of people's lives.
#2. On the forum we try to keep it "Rated R", if that's any indication of the forum's environment. Not PG, not X -- just R. This may be occasionally bent if the situation warrants it, but keep that kind of thing to a minimum. We are assuming everyone here is capable of handling themselves in a social situtation. As such, moderation of content will only occur when it is obvious that a poster's sanity or maturity has failed them.
#3. Bans, deletions, modifications, and rewriting are at the sole discretion of the administrators and moderators and will be imposed without warning if guidelines laid out here are in any way breached. Our specific policy about banning and editting can be found
here.
#4. Absolutely no inviting or name-dropping for the purpose of solicitation. The text will instantly be removed and possibly the user as well, depending on the circumstances. The legitimate reasons for name-dropping are very few and very very far between.
#5. If you must, attack the idea -- never the person; take personal fights in private. There is a huge difference between being against an idea and character assassination, so be very sure to only use harsh language against concepts. The people are not to be flamed.
#6. Do not use the "you are close-minded" or "LOL You are SO stupid" approach when discussing something. Actually, in general, it's far better to avoid LOL at all, or even lol cause it's just offensive in most non-casual circumstances. Back yourself up with facts, dates, times, sources, and common sense. Also, do not use discipline-specific language as an intimidation technique to try to push a point.
#7. If the system is being abused, notify an administrator. We will respond to any queries asap.
#8. Try to keep thread titles meaningful by discussing only what is relevant to the first post of the thread. If other things crop up, start a new thread and focus on that issue there instead of heaping two or three topics into one strand.
#9. Just for general courtesy's sake, try to avoid "ratspeak"(i.e. how r u?) and "l33t"(i.e. y0, l8r, and any other l33t hax0r variant).
#10. We don't need any more admins or mods. Don't ask.
If these rules are adhered to -- and I believe them all to be simply things one should automatically assume are in place when joining any forum -- there will be no problems and, in general, the board will run smoother. Thanks for reading these, since it is often something that people skip over entirely. Have fun on the board.
